Biography

Dr. April Ivey is an accomplished clinical leader with over a decade of dedicated experience spanning inpatient, outpatient, and community mental health ecosystems. Currently serving as the Director of Psychotherapy at Author Health, Dr. Ivey oversees clinical psychotherapy operations, steering teams toward high-impact, compassionate care. Her career is defined by a deep commitment to serving complex, vulnerable, and marginalized populations, utilizing her specialized training as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP), and Qualified Supervisor (QS).

Dr. Ivey’s extensive clinical foundation includes critical roles across diverse care settings. In Washington, D.C., she served as a clinical manager supporting substance-affected families and navigating the intricacies of the foster care system. She later spent nearly five years with the University of Maryland Medical Group, sharpening her clinical intervention skills, offering individual, couples and family psychotherapy. Dr. Ivey then transitioned into value-based care at Cityblock Health, where she excelled as both Care Team Lead and the Lead of Behavioral Health and Wellness. In 2023, she joined Author Health as the Senior Manager of Care Management and was promoted to Director of Psychotherapy in November 2023, where she continues to champion systemic clinical excellence.

A proud alumna of Howard University, Dr. Ivey earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 2010, followed by her Master of Social Work with a specialized Mental Health focus in 2012. Driven by a passion for advanced practice and systemic change, she returned to academia to earn her Doctor of Clinical Social Work (DSW) from the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 2022. Outside of her clinical leadership, Dr. Ivey finds her balance in nature. She is an avid traveler who loves spending time at the beach, reading, practicing yoga, and recharging near the water.

"To me, working at Author Health is deeply rooted in the knowledge that our work directly reaches a highly vulnerable population—people who might otherwise be forgotten, overlooked, or marginalized by our broader societal systems. Psychotherapy is more than clinical intervention; it offers a rare, privileged window into the lived experiences of our patients. Through this lens, we are able to provide them with authentic support, a sense of hope, and a tangible path forward that they may have otherwise struggled to find on their own. It is an honor to lead a team that turns this mission into reality every single day."

Anxiety, depression, and sleep changes in older adults

Anxiety, depression, and sleep problems may show up as irritability, physical complaints, confusion, withdrawal, or changes in routine rather than obvious sadness or panic.
